ARRIVING

AIRPORTS

The nearest international airports are in Istanbul  and Izmir. You will find that going through passport and customs control is fairly easy as long as your passport and student visa are in order and you are not bringing in goods that are prohibited by Turkish law.

INTERCITY BUS SERVICES

Çanakkale can be reached by the frequent intercity bus services from Istanbul and  Izmir. Overseas visitors generally fly into Istanbul, take a taxi or train (light railway) to the coach terminal (otogar) and make the journey to Çanakkale in about six hours.

Intercity buses are all modern and air-conditioned. They run almost every hour, day and night. Avoid travelling National Holidays when there is shortage pf places.  Buses from Istanbul arrive at Eceabat on the European side then board the ferry over to Canakkale. When arrving in Canakkale either the bus station or ferry terminal, you can easily find a minibus to Terzioglu Campus or Anafartalar Campus.

TRAINS / OTHER

There is no trains, plane services or boats directly linking to Canakkale with other cities, but it is possible to catch the fast seabus from Istanbul to Bandirma and then take a bus for two hour. Hitchhiking is not a normal practice in Turkey.

DRIVING TO CANAKKALE FROM ISTANBUL

From the airport, take the TEM motorway towards Edirne. At Silivri, exit the motorway and follow signs for Tekirdag, which will bring you to the E25. Follow the E25 to Kesan, then take the E24 towards Çanakkale/Gelibolu (Gallipoli). Follow this road to Eceabat, where you can catch a car ferry directly to the ferry landing in the centre of Çanakkale.

MARINA

Private and charter yachts can use the marina at Çanakkale.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

Minibuses  operate within the city and to and from the outlying districts and other towns in the province of Çanakkale. Fares are fixed and usually displayed on the front window of the minibuses.

TAXIS

Taxis can be found within the city and identified with their original yellow colour. They operate using taxi-meters and the fare depends on the length of your journey. They are naturally more expensive than minibuses, but foreign visitors usually find the fares quite reasonable.

FERRIES

Ferries carry both passengers and cars across the Çanakkale Straits and operate on the following routes:

  • Çanakkale - Eceabat

  • Gelibolu - Lapseki

  • Çanakkale - Kilitbahir

  • Çanakkale - Gokceada

  • Kabatepe - Gokceada

  • Bozcada - Yukyeri
