Hellespont is the ancient name of this Strait , and the
history of the area goes back to about 3000 B.C. According
to mythology , when the children of King Athamas , Phryxus
and Hell , were sent away by their stepmother , they were mounted on a
a flying ram with their mother Nephele , the Goddess of the Cloud.
Whilst flying over the straits , Princess Helle fell off the ram into the
water ... giving the foundation for the name Hellespont. (Phryxus flew to
Colchis , where he sacrified the ram to Zeus and hung its golden fleece
on a tree to be guarded by fierce dragon.
